- This event has passed.
Description
Dear 2016 & 2018 100ABCWomen,
This spring, the Office of the Vice-President Equity and Community Inclusion is pleased to host the 10th Annual Viola Desmond Awards and Banquet.
Taking place on May 11, 2018 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, we will be remembering Viola Desmond for her contribution to the Canadian civil rights movement, celebrate her likeness on Canada’s new $10 bill, and recognize some of the many achievements Black women have brought to this country.
The event will highlight the achievements of three accomplished Canadian Black women. The 2018 Viola Desmond Awards honourees are:
- Hon. Mayann Francis, former first Black female Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia
- Dr. Malinda Smith, Professor, University of Alberta
- Ms. Vivian Barbot, first Black female to hold a leadership role in the Bloc Quebecois
Throughout the evening, as we showcase talent from students, staff and faculty, we will also recognize members of the Ryerson community who have contributed significantly to the empowerment of Black women on campus and in the Greater Toronto Area.

About Viola Desmond
Viola Desmond (1914-1965) was an African-Nova Scotian female entrepreneur who challenged racial segregation at the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia in 1946. Her struggle became one of the most publicized incidents of racial discrimination in Canadian history and Desmond remains widely recognized for her catalyzing efforts.
Join us in May for what undoubtedly will be a memorable event. Thank you for your support. I look forward to seeing you there.
